Default 1991 pontiac firebird fuel pump question(s)

My son has a 1991 firebird v8 5.0 base model. A previous owner ran an inline fuel pump as an alternative to the in tank fuel pump. My son now needs to replace the inline fuel pump. It is a bit difficult to find information needed online for this and the guy at the auto parts store seemed to know nothing. Can he replace the inline fuel pump with a regular in tank type pump or does he need a special pump? Also, he needs to know how many psi's he needs the pump for.

Thanks a bunch! Were hoping to replace this tomorrow.

I'd say the previous owner had the in-tank pump go out on him and he took the lazy way out. The external pump, trying to suck gas through the dead pump in the tank, gets overworked, and that's likely to be why it burned out. There's only one right way to fix it, and that's by dropping the tank and replacing the in-tank pump and removing the redneck pump.
