My 1954 bel air is having some problems. First its starts right up and sounds great but then dies out pretty fast after. When looking down the throat of the carb the accelerator pump does work, so any ideas? Second when the car wants to run for a longer length of time, at the exhaust pipe there is one strong puff and is not consistent, possibly a valve problem?

I'd say that the problem is solely in the Carb.
Possibly a stopped up Jet ?
Pull the top of the Carb and unscrew the Jet. Blow it out with air, or, "carefully" run a small wire (like from your wire brush) through it to clear any debris.
Once you get the Carb problem out of the way, then we'll see about the exhaust issue.
