Default '03 s-10 driveshaft \ u joint trouble

hi all,
you'll have to bear with me and my crappy explanations, as i am not a car guy. trying to understand my ramblings may be rubbish at best, but i'll give it a go...

recently my truck started making alot of metal on metal squealing as i would drive, so naturally i threw the truck up on some stands and started pulling stuff out. i came across the culprit of all the ruckus, and it seems to be a part attached to the drive shaft, inbetween what i believe to be is a couple of universal joints. again not a car guy so im probably worng? i took some pictures to help me get my point across here

the truck is an '03 s-10 ex cab w\ vortech v6.

this is the part of the drive shaft in question. the left side is the side that attaches to the rear differential, and that knucle on the right side is where the noise is coming from. i guess its a universal joint, right? (for later referance, we'll call it [#1] ) anyways its all siezed up and hard to move. when it does move, it sqeales. also that right side slips over a splined shaft on a smaller drive shaft that goes into the transmission.

ok, i guess i can only post links that will take you to the pics...?

lets give it one more try here!

here is the shaft

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/DSC05545.jpg

here is the u joint [#1]

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/DSC05547.jpg

here inside of that u joint [#1] is where the noise is coming from. i dont know whats in there? is it a bearing??? its hard to tell from the pic i know.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/DSC05588.jpg

basically i need to know if i can pull this thing apart to change that piece out. and if so, how do i do it, and what do i call the part? also, does anybody know where i can pull a PDF showing the break down of the part? some sort of instruction manual would be nice if i cant pull it apart to fix it, where can i get a new drive shaft? anybody in or around Austin, TX know a place i can go? or a place on the internet i can get the stock part? i dont want to go to the dealership.

i have some pics of numbers here too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/DSC05548.jpg

there is a warning on this sticker telling me to balance the mating shaft. anybody know what that means or how i do it?

sorry for all the stupid links, thanks in advance! -chris munn

You need to make your IMG tags lower case. [img]...[/img] instead of [IMG]...[/IMG] [/align][/align]Looks to me like the driveshaft joint needs to begreased. There is a grease zerk in your picture[/align][/align]The mating shaft must be balanced so the new driveshaft won't bounce if you have to replace the dirveshaft.[/align]

i pumped grease in that zerk. all that does is pump grease over the spline shaft without having to remove the whole shaft. its actually like a bearing or something inside of the u joint thats making all the noise. its directly in the center of everything. i tried to take the joint apart, but the bearing cups arent held in place with any clips. this things is sealed. it looks like instead of using the normal clips, its all held together with little pins. they must be made of lead or something because everytime i touch them to remove them, they just mash.

i called the dealership today and they want $800.oo+ for a new shaft. FORGET THAT! thats 1/10 the cost of the truck! i talked to a guy at a drive train shop today and he said he could get it fixed for probably around $120.oo....i sure hope so!

so if i just do the [img] in lower case the image will show up on the screen without having to go through the stupid link? ill have to try that next time. i just copy and past from photobucket.

well for anybody who cares, i got my u joint fixed. i cost me 135$ at the local drive train shop. my problem now is that i need to balance the mating shaft. is that something i can do myself or do i need to spend the $60 to have the shop do it for me?
