Default new brake pads

hey gents,

i am a long time chevy ownerdriving a 99 two-door blazer, but i just started doing most of my own repair and maint because of the economy etc.

i recently replaced my rear brake pads. a pretty simple opperation that went smoothly and seemed to be fine. driving seemed to be fine. stopped well. anti-lock breaks worked fine etc. but when i stopped driving aftera short spin on the highway the brakes were VERY hot andsmoking a bit. a diagnostic thermometer was reading about 550-600 degrees! i am wondering if there is a break- in period on new brake pads or did i screw something up? should i be alarmed or is this normal? any info would be great. thanks!

They are very possobly dragging. Did you compress the pistons down all the way before you replaced the calipers?[/align]

i thought i did. the caliper seemed to have a decent amount of float and they slipped right back on.is the only way to fix it to get back in there and re compress the piston further? thanks for the reply.

Well, that was square one. You now may need to bleed the brakes. Air in the line can cause the brakes to drag as well.

if they are actually dragging and you don't have real aggressive metallic pad's it is possible the caliper's are sticking . you can run into that when you fully compress the caliper piston's ,on a older truck .
