Smile Vehicle speed sensor doesn't work

Hi, I have a problem with my 98 S-10 speed sensor. There is no 5 volt reference voltage. The sensor itself checks O.K. as far as resistance reading goes. My wiring diagram shows wires going to the computer and to the ignition control module. My question is, exactly what is the source of the 5 volts reference signal. Is it produced in the ignition module and fed thru the computer to the VSS or is it produced in the computer and fed to the ignition module and VSS. Knowing this will help me determine if I have a bad computer or a bad ignition module. Thanks
