oil pan removal
I am having trouble removing the oil pan on a 98 w/t 2wd 4.3L. All bolts that i can see are removed butthe pan will not come off. Any suggestion? Am I missing something?

Its probably baked on there, ya know? Try to use a flat head screw driver to help it along.
Also, I bet theres a vaccume sort of pressure holding it in as well. Try taking the oil fill cap off. |
Becareful if you use a flat tip screw driver... try not to nick the pan or block or you could have a leak in the future. I would use a block of wood and good mallet on the corners of the pan and swing away..... good luck. don't know if you will have to raise the engine to clear the girdill......

Also, I bet theres a vaccume sort of pressure holding it in as well. Try taking the oil fill cap off. Gasket to the main body. Try using a rubber mallet. You can get 1 for like 1.50 in the outdoors section at WalMart. Then try knocking downwards on it, and carefully see if you might be able to wedge something In between the pan and the body and carefully pry it out. Or firmly grasp each side of the pan and jerk it side to side while pulling down. Also, I strongly suggest you have the truck on ramps while doing this. Not jackstands or jacks, ramps that you drive up onto. Oh, and you had better replace that oil pan gasket with a new 1 before you Put the pan back on or I would be willing to bet you that you will start to see Drops of oil in your driveway in the near future. |

In case you're not aware, there are kits for repairing oil pan threads. Installs in 10 minutes and they seal perfectly.

thread repair kit is much easier. If the pan is not severely rusted i'd go that way. pan removal is probably a 4 hr job. you have to lower the front diff, lift the engine up to get clearance to slide the pan out.
