Default 06 z71 check engine and code 449

A few weeks back my check engine light came on in my 06 z71 and I got the tighten fuel cap message. I took it to the mechanic, he hooked it up to the computer and he said go buy a new gas cap, the seal may be bad. He turned the check engine light off, I replaced the gas cap, and a few more days later the check engine light came back on. This time with no tighten gas cap message.

I took it back, he hooked it up again and the code 449 came up on the computer. Its the code about the vent valve or something for the gas tank. He said it wouldnt hurt anything to drive it, but I'd have to get it fixed before inspection.

I just called the chevrolet place and they told me the worst case scenario would be $300-$325 if they re-routed everything and mount the filter at the transmission. Something about trucks who get drove a lot in dirt, gravel, or mud, it clogs the filter up or something. Basically, I think its not really an aftermarket part, but something chevrolet did to improve this vent valve issue. He said, if the carbon filter was saturated in gas, that would cost an additional $200!

What are you guys thinking?
