Default 1994 chevy 1500 clutch problems

So a couple months ago I picked up a 94 chevy pickup with a bad transmission that I have now decided to do a 5 speed transmission swap in it. I got a trans from a 95 chevy pickup and took the trans out of it for the 94. I got the 95 for parts but before I tore it down it ran and drove but had a slipping clutch. Now im in the process of putting the trans in the 94 and im having some issues with the clutch fork and pivot ball. When I put the fork on the pivot ball there is a space in between the threads and the fork so the fork can slide back and forth. This is my first doing anything with a clutch so its a learning experience for me. But im wondering if the fork is supposed to be able to slide back and forth or if its supposed to stay in one spot. Thanks in advance. If needed I can try and clarify my problem a little better.
