Default 2001 chevy 2500hd transmission

I own a 2001 chevy 2500hd and I am having transmission troubles which are obvious, what I am curious about however with all the electrical stuff nowadays is if its the tranny itself or not. when it is cold, i have all gears but as it warms up, the engine that is, it sometimes won't shift from 3rd gear on and I wont have reverse. but then sometimes i do, so i am confused if the transmission needs to be replace or is there a linkage in there that could be bad or a censor? i dont know much about transmissions. any advice would be helpful, thanks
