im looking at buying a 97 1500 with the 5.0 and it has the 4l60e in it the guy just replaced the throttle position sensor and he said right after a code for shift solenoid A came on and now it has a slow start feels like its starting in 2nd and reverse doesnt always work feels like it just revs sometimes but other times is fine. could the shift solenoid screw up reverse i no it affects the drive gears and its prolly causing the 2nd gear start issue but i dont know about the reverse. i dont wanna buy a truck to have to replace or rebuild the tranny

don't buy it or you will be fixing the trans.

If you can get it for $500.00 I would buy it and flush the trans, install a new filter and see what happens. My 96 was doing the same thing and after a flush and filter at at 196k it works great...oh yeah it's now pushing 267k and still on the original trans...you might get lucky. I also use Lucas trans fluid.

Well, depends on the mileage, type of use, and how much the truck is going to cost you. If the truck is in great condition, and reasonable mileage with an old guy that drove it, then it may be worth dumping money into it. If a kid had it and beat the poop out of it, not so much.

As 96 said, you can always try the simple stuff first (fluid and filter swap). However, if the truck has over 100k miles and the fluid has never been changed, then it has been my experience that changing the fluid usually causes more problems then it solves.

So, if the truck only cost you a couple hundred bucks and the engine and other components are strong, then it may be worth a $1500 tranny rebuild. But you have to figure in the couple hundred for the fluid swap in case that didn't work.

So, is the truck potentially worth $2k? If so, then buy it. But that is only a question you can answer.

Hope this helps

Eric
