Default 88 k2500 brake lights

I just got an 88 k2500 I had to replace the 5.7 due to the block freezing (they tried to fix it with JB weld) so then I have a brake light problem there was none so I got a new brake light switch and that gave me brake lights but the park light is way brighter and when I turn the turn signals on the same element in the bulb is same one that lights up for the brake light so I changed all the bulbs and its still the same so I grounded the bulb to the truck frame and its still the same and when I turn on the headlights the brake light goes out when I turn off the headlights the brake lights come back on that leads me to think that the turn signal high/low switch in the column could be the problem as the high low part don't work It don't click and the headlights stay on low but the turn signal works fine is there a way to use a test light to check before I rip into the the column my Haynes book don't seem to cover this I have a test light and an ohm meter but not sure what wires to check any help would be appreciated for this new to this forum guy

take the assembly out of the box and see what you have for power and ground there, those things are pretty common for failing

Thanks you guys nailed it. the ground connections in the brake lights were not making contact in the brake light boxes. the fix was to drag out the solder gun with a little solder on all the contacts that didnt have solid connections. I should not have any more problems in there again. once again thank you for the help.
