My truck has aquired a knocking noise that started 2 months ago. It sounds like it is either coming from the tourque converter area or from the oil pan. The noise does increase in variation as i had someone acelerate while i was under the truck but not in noise loudness.

Now i thought it was the bad cat converter i have on the truck but was under it today and it aint coming from them.

I replaced my transmission back in june and havent put in all my dust cover bolts as of yet could that be justification for the knocking? could it be something with the starter? Or the oil pump not functioning properly even though oil pressuer is good?

Ill put the rest of the dust cover bolts in and see if they put the noise down.

What would i have to drop to get the oil pan down or could i just plop those bolts off and finagle it off in case i have to replace the oil pump?

sounds like a connecting rod getting ready to blow.

its a rod knocking. make sure you fix it soon otherwise one day you'll have a rod sticking out of the side of your block. cheaper to fix it sooner than later.

Just what i didnt want to hear shoot a rod. Well how hard is it to fix the rod? There under the rocker arm right the push rods? And how do i know which rod it is thats causing the knock?

And how long on average does the rod usualy take to blow totaly?

pull the oil pan and maybe you can see which rod it is. It can blow any time. But not wise to plan any long or out of town trips with it. It will leave you along the road somewhere.

I think it would be a connector rod, the one from the crank to the piston.
I am chasing the same problem right now, I have removed the valve covers and the top looks good, last night I dropped the oil pan and everything looks ok. I don't know of a good way to check the rod bearings without removing the caps, and if I do that then I will change the bearings anyway. None of my rods looked bent or cracked and the bearings are inexpensive, so while I'm in there I will replace them.

depending on how bad the knock is. if its loud, im sure you'll notice which rod it is. if its a little more mild then it will be harder to tell.

ok so i have to drop the pan to check and then look at the top ones also. To drop the oil pan what do i have to remove. i dont have to lift the engine do i? cause my engine lift has a 350 vortec on it right now ready to get dropped in to my other truck.

you might have to. its not the funnest fix in the world.

I'm lucky that my Tahoe is lifted and the front axle swap both make it easy to drop the pan.
