Default 98 transmission fluke
I have a 98 silverado with about 122,000 miles. When I am out in the country doing my inspections, it starts to shift into 1st gear and 2nd gear very hard. It will continue to do so until I stop and turn the truck off. Then it shifts correctly again for some time.

i had a similar problem, it ended up being a computer issue
