Default "california equipped" in utah

hi all,
new to the forum, been searching quite a bit but no luck so far so here goes.

i have a 97 silverado 5.7l with 122,000 mi. that is "california equipped". obdII is throwing code p0430 which points to the cat converter. the 4 o2 sensors are all new, as are the sparkplugs and wires and coils. so i have been shopping around. there are "49 state" models and "california equipped" models. the "49ers" are generally a little over half the cost of the "ca" models. i live in southern utah and am not required to pass emission tests. i have contacted several aftermarket manufacture with mixed results. i have also contact several local shops with mixed results. so now to the question or questions.

will obdII know the difference between the two types of catalytic converters?

are there any recommended diagnostic tests other than those in the service manual that could confirm 100% that it is indeed the cats ?

If you have California emissions you must use California cats. If not the CEL will come back on. I have seen it many times where another shop put the wrong cat on and anywhere from 2 weeks to less than a year CEL is back on with PO420 or PO430.

Yep. This is what we go through whenever we need parts.
there are 49 state parts and there are california parts which are twice as expensive.
The sensors are likely tuned to the california cats.
HOWEVER, I have heard of lots of people over here puting 49 state cats on their cars with no repercussions.
Good luck

i went ahead and picked up "cali-equipped" cats, but have come up with a few more questions regarding installation.

do i need to drop the crossmember under the tranny to r&r the cats? the service manual makes no mention of it.

do the m10X1.5 flange nuts need to be oem or will any of this size and quality do?

the repalcement is a magnaflow and has arrived as 2 piece unit with a slip joint and clamp. any guesstimates for a torque value on this? as magnaflow has not provided one.

if anyone has a moment would love to hear it.

cheers
