I have a '94 Chevy silverado 1500. The rear may be going bad. I found an '89 2500 series truck for sale. Is it possible to take the rear out of the '89 and put it in the '94?

Need a little more info here. 2wd or 4wd? Are the rims the same size? This isn't likely, but are the differentials the same size? Check the rear cover plate.( Count the bolts and measure it across.) Check the VINs and the vehicle info in the glove boxes, and under the hood. Can you find the gear ratio for either or both? With enough determination, you can attach a Cadillac engine to a VW bug.(guy used to do it on a dragstrip circuit in the seventies) That doesn't mean it's a good idea. You have to find out how compatible these diffs. are, and if the changes will ultimately make you happy.

It may. If you have 4x4, make sure the new rear has the same gears as you have in the front. If not, you will have to swap them and unless you do that yourself, gets pricey. More then likely the new rear will be a 8-lug. Keep that in mind when considering the wheels. Take a look at both with a measuring tape. Measure the total length of the axle and take note of where the spring perches and shock mounts are on both. If they are in the same place, it'll go in easily. If not, you may have to cut the perches and shock mounts off and weld them back on. If you can, take some pics and we can better answer. Good luck!
