I have a 2004-2500 non-HD crew cab 4x4 and from what I can tell, the difference is that the HD frame is 2" taller meaning more heavy duty. You can see this in the front bumper the most, as the top plastic bumper cap is 2'" taller than the non-HD and the 1/2 ton. Stronger frame means more capacities. Mine also has a 373 rear gear which I'm not sure you could get on the HD. I could be wrong, but I thought the HD came standard with a 410 ratio. My truck has 8 lug wheels and a 8600 lbs. rating.
