Fuel pump - Whole module or just pump?

I have a 97 Chevy 1500 and need to replace the fuel pump. I see that the pump is sold separately but I have been told that you must replace the entire unit. Is this true or can I just replace the pump and the strainer?

i have the same truck. ive replaced one pump in my truck before and im about to have to do it again. u have to change the whole thing. u will also need a specialty tool to get the fuel lines off. they make 2 style pumps for the 97s. 1 with a square wiring connector (fuel pump and sending unit connector) and a rectangular wiring connector (fuel tank pressure sensor). on this style they have problems with the square wiring connector that causes the pump to go bad. this is the style i have on mine. the other style has 2 retangular wiring connectors. a replacement connector will come with the pump so u can change your wiring harness over. this style should last longer.
