My 97 Silverado will not start. it isnt the starter because it tries to turn over. Its not the battery because its having no problem trying to start. I think gas isnt getting to the engine. any idea on what would prohibit gas from getting used.

bad fuel pump, relay, or ground when u turn the key on to acc, do u hear a buzz coming from the fuel tank?

yeah, its buzzed when i turn on the accesories since i bought it 8 months ago

have you grounded a plug to see if it sparks?

i just tried to start it and it didnt buzz. i guess that means my fuel pump is done. how much would a new one be?

it depends on who you know i guess, about 400 bucks here in canada with my discount, idk how much in the us. first thing to do b4 u blow all that money, is to drop the tank and see if there is power to the pump, then look at the condition of the ground, if there is power and ground is good, pump is toast

also, buy a new fuel filter and replace it every 6 months for long pump life

If the truck is turning over but not starting then fuel is not getting to the engine or your spark plugs are not doing their job.

could be a clogged fuel filter or pump. For a few bucks it would be worth it to
change the fuel filter before buying anything else.

If the fuel filter is changed but it still wont start, then check all of your spark plugs.
If you have never changed out the pugs or it has been a while
since you did it, 1 plug is only a few bucks, just change 'em out.
Normally a visual inspection will be enough to tell you whether a plug is toast or not.

But the fuel filter should be changed out regularly anyway and with luck maybe that is your problem.


EDIT Just saw your post saying the fuel pump is not buzzing (priming). The pump is your problem but it
might not be bad. check all your electrical connections and relays/fuses before you start blindly changing parts out.

And also FWIW I change my fuel filter every 9,000 miles, and my spark plugs every 15,000 miles.
to make sure parts like the pump don't fail on you, it is in your best interest to regularly do maintenance
like fuel filter changes, spark plug changes, and either shake your air filter clean or replace.

(I get 9k and 15k miles cuz I do all my maintenance in 3,000 mile intervals. So I do multiple maintenance tasks
when I change my oil/filter)

Also it is best to buy a cheap notebook and write all maintenance tasks done so you can keep track.
And if you ever sell the truck, a maintenance record can be a valuable selling tool.

i would deffinatly changed the fuel pump, mine did the same thing awhile back and i changed the fuel pump and i finaly got it start and it runs great now.

best to test to see if there is power and ground first, for every 2 out of 3 times it is the pump, the other time it is a relay and it sure sucks spending 400 bucks on a pump to find out the relay is bad
