I have learned one thing here....

I would assume there should be more complaints about the 1500 versus the 2500.......because there are so many more 1500s in comparison.
A 2500 would be nice, but the added cost of purchase and the huge drop in fuel economy is a deal-breaker for most people who really don't need one. I believe in having more truck than you need, but very few people tow or haul enough weight to warrant the upgrade.

I went from a 2500hd 6.0L full towing package to a base 4.8 1500. I sold the 2500 for a lot and got the 1500 for next to nothing. Here's the thing:
the fuel mileage difference is not noticeable. The 4.8 engine is a slug. It can barely move the truck let alone tow anything.
I agree in having more truck also. When you need the power or towing capability, its there. When I find a good deal on a 3/4 ton, I'll be selling the 1500.

Sorry to hear that you had such bad luck with the 4.8L V8. My 2004 1500 has the 5.3L and has no problem hustling down the road. I don't tow anything with it, although it has the towing package, hitch, wiring, etc., etc., that you need.
I have hauled a full bed of mulch and a ton of landscaping bricks short distances with it - perhaps two or three times in the past four years -- but would NEVER do that on a regular basis.
I get 14 or 15 mpg in local driving and perhaps 18 or 19 on the highway (on a very long trip). I know people who have 2500 gassers (6.0L) and they get 9 city and 13 or 14 highway. That is actually a pretty big difference.
If you haul heavy, tow a lot or use the truck in commerce, the 2500 might be your best bet, but the 1500 should be more than adequate for personal use.

Right now I'm averaging a little over 15 combined - I'd read they got 16-18 but that was on the internet. I didn't buy it because its economical to drive. I've put 30,000 trouble free miles on it over the last 12 months.
I plan on buying a slide in camper some time down the road.
It just seems that there are very few complaints about 2500s - and yes - there are more 1500s
