Default Need some help with timing issue

I have a 1993 Chevy 1500 5.7. Yesterday I got it running and then I drove down the street and it jumped time? I set it to TDC, I put the rotor facing #1 piston, timed it to 0 on the timing tab, then I disconnected the spark control module and reset it back to 0 on the tab, The catylst on radiator shroud says to do that, i didnt know if i was supposed to plug it back in while the truck was running so i shut the truck off, disconnected the negative battery cable plugged the spark control back in, and the truck started right up. Drove it down the street about 2 blocks had to play with the gas pedal to keep it going in first but got better in 2nd and 3rd, got home shut it off, started it back up put the timing light back on it and the harmonic balancer line was nowhere near the tab and when i tried to disconnect the spark module to retime the truck dies right away. How do i get it to stay running with the spark plug module disconnected? when i do get it to run with it disconnected and put it to 0 on the tab do i then plug it back in before i shut the truck off?

everything from the EGR to all my sensors are brand new, exhaust too. Thank you.

Don't unhook anything. With it at idle 700 rpm, set the timming with light to about 8 deg btdc.

your not disconnecting the 4 wire connector at the distributor are you?

To initiate base timing you need to disconnect the tan/black wire. it may be behind a cover next to the fuel pump relay taped to the harness

I'm disconnecting the plug on the back wall.
