hey im new to the forums, and have been searching around a bit. Anyway, heres the deal... I currently drive a black 01 dodge ram sport 4x4 v8 with 120,000 miles. the bad part is, the transmission just went out, and to get it rebuilt would cost around $2,000. I really like this truck, except for the gas milage it gets. I am a college student right now, driving 30 miles one way to class. We have been thinking about and have been shopping around for a new truck(not dodge). We only found 1 out of the 10+ dealers around us. It is a 08 v6 chevy silverado single cab. its black. 2wd , with 19,000 miles. its priced at $17,700, with a 5 year powertrain and bumper to bumper warrenty. here is the hard part...we cannot decide what would be best to do, keep my truck and pay 2k to get it fixed, or pay monthly for a new truck? . we know if we try to trade in my truck we will get less than $3,500. what would be a wise decision here? im asking here, because i want to here from silverado owners on what they think. What is the mpg like on a v6 silverado? i get around...15mpg with my current vehicle. any info is appreciated

If you ever plan to tow anything in the future the v6 will not be a happy option to have. Mileage wise there isn't a lot of difference between the 4.3, 4.8 and 5.3. The v8s don't work hard to push the truck around and thus get very good mileage.
I just priced out an 09 on the chevy web site. Reg cab LS with 4.8 short box. Supplier price $22,209 then $2500 incentive, = $19709.
$2000 more for a brand new truck with a 295hp 4.8. Thats the same hp that my 2000 5.3 has and I get 21 mpg local driving with it.
You should be able to find a new one for that and if you can't I can hook you up with someone to get you the discount.

Hi townsley4,
Welcome to the Chevy Forums.
Maybe right now you just need a 1/4 ton truck and a 4-banger for better MPG. Do you have a lot of use for a full-size pickup right now, while you're in college?
Rubrhammer's right, the V6s rev higher than the small 8s, so gas mileage is close to the same.

In my opinion putting yourself into 17,000$ in debt to gain maybe a couple miles to the gallon isnt worth it. how is the dodges engine? if you think you can run the engine another 75,000 miles on a new or rebuilt tranny id say spend the 2,000 $. dont get me wrong the chevy v6 isnt bad and will last a while but you seem to like the dodge still and if you can keep it till you finish college get a better truck than the chevy v6!
