The 2012 2500 HD Duramax Diesel offers up to 680 highway miles on a single tank (approx. 36 gallon) when running on Diesel fuel.

With the stock tires and 1600 miles on the engine I get 15mpg on average. Bigger tires can cut the mileage down as will high speeds. It is a 7,000 lb. truck with 4WD so I don't expect great mileage, only 15% better than with a gas engine.
Duramax engine with the Allison transmission adds about $8k to the purchase price so do not get a diesel with a thought of saving money. Advantages are nearly double the torque and at 1700 RPM and the exhaust brake for downhill descents with a heavy load or towing a heavy trailer.
