Default Odometer: Error

I have a 2005 Silverado 2500 HD 4x4.

I have seen various posts concerning the fixes for the Instrument Cluster gauge problems, but nothing on just an Odometer problem. My odometer shows Error, and the tripmeter does not increment. I was able to set it to zero, but it stays at zero. All the other gauges work fine.

The dealer says this does not fall under the recall (?) notice, since that applied to sticky or non-working gauges. So fork over $$$$.

Can they or some third party company just reflash the EEPROM to fix this?
Could the VSS be a problem even though the speedometer works just fine?

Any and all ideas would be appreciated.
