Rear end noise (not too much fiber)

Ok guys, I'm pretty sure someone knows about 88-98 half ton rear end noise. I get a whirring/whining noise anywhere above 20mph. It's completely speed sensitive. It's the same noise when accelerating, braking, turning, coasting, and in neutral coasting. It just gets louder as I move faster. I got it up on jacks and popped the wheels and drums, put it in drive and it did the same thing. Trouble is, I can't tell if it's coming from the pumpkin, or the axleshaft bearings or what. It just basically sounds like there's no oil in the axle. I can't check that, the check bolt is absolutely seized in. before I drain all the fluid, can someone give me a little push in the right direction? by the way, it's a 97 4wd.
