IMO you could still be off a good bit adjusting that way. You do need to be sure that you unhook the dist wire from the computer when checking the timing, I'm sure you know that.

I ran at 12 for 1 season and just for the heck of it I replaced the rod bearings and I had a lot of wear on bearings that only saw about 5,000 miles.
I think it was too agressive.

You hear it start to knock, then back off slowly, maybe 2, 3 degrees. I could always feel it smooth out, it almost felt like I was hitting a notch or slight dip when the engine just starts to hum like a sewing machine...
