Question Transmission Flush vs Filter change

I've got an 03 Silverado 4.8L with around 90,000 miles on it and have never had any tranny issues. I called the dealer to ask about a fluid, filter change and flush. He said that they really don't bother with changing the filter as the flush usually works to clean the filter.Only after an identified problem would they usually change the filter.

The quote, $160.00 for a flush and new fluid, but no filter change. Any thoughts? Is that too much? Should I get the filter changed?

Dropping the pan is a thing of the past. The only time it is done now is if the pan is leaking. A good quality flush machine will clean the filter as it pushes 16 quarts of fluid through it. $160 sounds around the right price for a trans using Dexron III

is this the first service of the transmission?

I would have had it serviced at around 60K if truck had not been used under heavy service such as towing 3-4 days a week. If under heavy service then transmission should have been serviced at around 30K.

So have transmission flushed, changing the filter is up to you, if you feel better about the sevice with transmission filter changed then go for it.
whats a few dollars among friends if you feel better about the service.

I bought it with 37k and this will be the first tranny service I have done (90k). I was told that fluid was replaced at 30k, but who knows. I just started towing a trailer last year (every other week in summer), so I figure good time to have it done.

Yeah, the way the GM factory jams the shifter linkage and the transmission mount into the way, I could see why dropping the pan is a thing of the past.

Call me a purist, but 78,000 miles, and I'm on my third transmission filter.
