Default Transmission Vent Tube?

I have an 08' silverado 1500, 4.8L, 4x4. I was working on an issue under my truck and stumbled upon a tube that is not connected to anything. It is located on top of my transmission. I am still new to mechanics and therefore not familiar with this. I am assuming that it is a vent tube for the tranny, but I don't really know. My Haines repair manual doesn't really show anything. Any advice would be very grateful. Thank you.

You would be correct, it is likely the vent tube for the transmission

That is a great question to ask, as anyone new to working on vehicles might not know... all other lines from the transmission will be steel...

Yep. It should run from the top of the bell housing and terminate at the top of the t-case. It should be held to the tease by a plastic clip

Thanks for the info. I went back and looked a little harder at it and traced it back towards the top of the tranny near the engine. Good to know. Thanks again guys!

Glad you asked about the vent tube because I saw it under my 2000 Silverado 5.3 when I was changing the fuel filter. It ran down from the top of the transmission but I didn't see where or what it was connected to. the bottom part was not connected to anything it was just hanging. Could this be my vent tube and do I need to connect it back to were it is supposed to go. Not sure where it should go.

there is one for the transmission and one for the transfer case if you have 4wd. both are held by plastic clips located atop the t-case/transmission.
