Turn signal /cruise control switch removal

Turn signal /cruise control switch removal
I have a 1990 k1500 silverado. I need to replace the turn signal lever on the column. The mechanic that diagnosed my problem told me that this lever just snaps off. Is there any technique or tip you can give me to get this off correctly?
