Used Chevy Truck Buyer.. what to look for

Before you ask... yes... I have searched the forums.
So, here's the question. I'm looking for a 2003 ish Chevy 1500 ext cab for work. I have 2 Express 1500 4.3 V6's that I like, and want to stick with the vortec/chevy combo. I'll be doing 75% highway, 25% city with some towing of a 4000lb trailer.
What should I be looking for, or rather, looking out for, when buying a used 1500? I'm fairly familiar with the 4.3l. I don't need the towing power (or low gas mileage) of the 2500.
I'd like 'good' gas mileage and don't need to tow more than 5000lbs, but from what I've read on these forums, the 5.3 is a better engine and won't necessarily get worse gas mileage than the 4.3 or 4.8.
What are the red flags to look out for with these trucks. Obviously regular oil changes are important, and good tranny fluid...anything else?
Thanks,
Paul

Almost 300 views and 0 replies. I must be asking the wrong questions.
What should i be asking? Or does no-one want to point out the weak points of the silverado?
At least tell me which engine is best...

Get a 1500 with the 5.3, they average around 15+mpg. I have 3 silverados 4x4, 2-1500's with the 5.3 and 1-2500hd with the 8.1. Love the vortex, there a strong reliable engine.

I have a 2000 2500 Silverado and an 2005 1500 Suburban. Both have the 5.3. I added a K&N FIPK to both. The 2500 has larger brakes which is a nice feature for towing. I have added air bellows in the rear coil springs of my 1500 Suburban. I would get either of these for your application.
