Had a Prodigy $100 brake controller for 10 years on my '00 F-250 Diesel and pulled a 1971 vintage 4000# airstream with it. Overkill! Never had a problem with it. Basically the Airstream ran out of brakes about 8 years ago but the Ford always stopped it. Prices vary so check around before buying. Bought mine on line from Agri Supply. Laeiders is right. Had two pop ups. The small one was about 2000# with surge brakes that never worked right. Second I think had electric that were actuated like surge brakes on battery power. No battery; no brakes. Before you buy, since you sound like this is your first pop-up get experienced advice. I wouldn't worry about brakes I would worry about tires. Ran through them like corn flakes. Grease the bearings often they are NOT like auto bearings. Smoked a set in Al. Carry a spare tire or two. I kid you not. GL.

Charge and keep the battery in good shape. Tires are really important. Most take a beating. Check them often and torque the lug nuts. I would grease the berings if you don't know the history.
