Default Wheel Stud

I was taking off a tire on the rear of my 2008 Silverado. I always use a cheap impact that does not have very much torque. It backed 5 lugs out with no trouble. The sixth one made a couple rounds and stopped. I could tighten it and back it up to the same point every time. I hooked my mac tool impact. Same result. Unscrew a little and stop I would have about 1/8 space between lug and wheel but would not unscrew any more. I finally twisted it off. My question is do I have enough room to replace stud without pulling axle. I have drum brakes. I hope someone has run into this problem so that they can point me in the right direction.

I got to mess with it today. I was able to remove and replace stud just by removing brake drum...
