Default 2000 Tahoe Limited Tranny

I believe my tranny is going out...I get a nice gear on gear whinning noise while driving...not a grinding noise but more a whinning nose. At 60mph I get the occassional slip...but it might be a miss as I am still chasing my hard to start problem.

Last night I noticed my tranny was over filled...by what looks like alot as it had the air bubbles in it. So this morning I checked it (cold check) and the fluid was definately over the cold full mark by an inch (on the stick).

So before I go beat Valvoline for the "top your fluids off" smooth move can the over filled tranny cause my issues or are the two just a conicidence?

I syphined out 2 1/2 pints of fluid...going to do a cold check in the morning. Noise is still there but she shifted smoother. Now I am wondering if its a wheel bearing or the rear end.

I need help...stumped on this one:

I still have the noise... noticable at 25mph or faster. It gets louder with increased speed (IE more gas) but if I let off the gas it gets quieter....but its still very noticable in the cabin. I put it on N at 35 mph and the nose is still there but as speed drops the volume drops.

I have done the following:

1) drained the diff...fluid was thin but no metal. All the gears looked fine, no unusual wear patterns or anything. Filled it with 80-90w Valvaline (limited slip mix)...took 3 bottles.

2) U Joints have no play

3) Checked tranny...fluid is correct level. No metal and no burnt smell.

4) raised the back axel off the deck on jack stands and ran her up to 25mph...noise is there.

I am open to suggestions...this is driving me nuts!!!

Bearing? Doesn't sound like the tranny if the noise doesn't change with the gear shifts.
My old Acura MDX did the same thing, and it ended up being an axle shaft support bearing.

Isn't there a bearing on the output of the tranny where the drive shaft goes in? Maybe it's going out?

You might need a lift and a friend to help listen for the origin of the problem. With my MDX, the dealer put it on a lift with someone in the driver's seat, and a couple of service techs under the car to listen for where the noise was coming from.

The bad part on mine was that I told them it was a bearing, but they decided to replace the transmission. I drove it home only to still have the same noise. It ended up being a $15 bearing. I watched the service manager and the techs through the glass window, and there were some pretty animated gestures going on from the manager to the techs once they figured that out.

Keep us posted.

With it raised (rear wheels off the ground, front blocked) and wheels spinning at 35mph with a screw driver pressed against the diff housing you can tell its definately coming from there...

so anyone replace the pinion bearing?? How much and big of a pain is it?
