Default 2001 4X4 switch works but no lights

Hi,
Have a 2001 Suburban and wife noticed the 4X4 control switches light up on start-up and the 2 HI (that is what she drives it in ) indicator light stays on for a short period of time then goes out. You can switch into the other modes, 4HI, and 4LO and none of the indicator lights light up.
Here's the confusing part - during the day, she drives with DRL's on, and at night, the DRL's go out and headlights come on.
When that happens, the 4X4 switch is lit up and whatever mode you are in is lit up.
Anybody have any suggestions? I have replaced the switch 2X to no avail.
Thanks

More information:
Was able to confirm today if the parkinglight or headlights are on, the switch lights up, showing which transfercase mode you are in. However, if you are in DRL mode, the lights do not illuminate, yet the switch works. If you think to move headlamp selector to anytihng other than the automatic mode, the lights illuminate when you switch modes.
So everything is working but the indicator lights do not light up when in automatic DRL mode.
Does any of this ring a bell?
