Default 2004 Tahoe starts... MOST of the time...

....its the other times that are bothersome.

Just about everyday - usually around midday - it will not start on the first attempt. takes about 2-3 tries before it starts and sometimes we have to give it gas. a time or two it felt like it started then died.

<OAlso seems like the initial cranking cycle when it does this is shortened....<O
have had the fuel pump checked and they came back and said it was fine...course they also said it cranked fine while it was at the shop.
<O
2wd with 4.8L<O
has a ton of miles on it, but its still truckin along and dont want to get stranded somewhere
<O
any ideas?<O

There's a check valve in that system to hold fuel to the engine, and not let it drain back to tank. There has been a few post's about this issue, and I cannot remember what section they are under. Hopefully one can see this post, and reply.

Check the fuel pressure, running and off it it drops quickly after shut off the fuel is draining back and the pump may be the issue... pressure should be 55 to 60 running 55 - 50 off.
