2007 5.3 AFM Issues
Hi,
Helping my friend with a suburban 2007 with 5.3 AFM engine. Supposedly a year or so ago the drivers side valve cover was replaced with the fixed one to avoid PCV pullover at 150K. Unfortunately it still goes through a lot of oil. Just recently it started misfiring and I found plugs 1 and 7 missing chunks of electrode insulation. Anyway to tell by the outside if the valve cover is the corrected one without taking it off? After replacing the plugs it went 2K miles without needing oil, but after that it needs it every 500 miles and it's not leaking it.
Wouldn't the rectified valve cover reduce oil usage? what else can I check? What about using heavier weight oil? it uses 5w30 non synthetic currently.
Thanks in advance!

the valve cover is only one part of the fix. did they perform the entire tsb for the oil consumption issue....remove the oil pan and install the shield over the afm valve? de-carbon the oil control rings?

Using a tuner to defeat the AFM may also help, I've added a catch can to my 07 5.3L , thou I'm not using oil, the can does keep about a 1/2 cup of oil from ever entering the intake between oil changes.
