2011 Suburban 5.3L (6L80) transmission slipping/overheat/P2723
Hey yall. I have a 2011 suburban with 5.3L flex fuel engine with 6 speed auto trans (think its the 6L80).
Problems
1yr ago until now - 2nd gear would slip, sometimes badly. accelerating from a stop, when shifting into 2nd with mild throttle the engine would just rev with no acceleration until I backed off the throttle. Then it would 'grab hold' and drive normally. The issue came and went.
1 week ago - pulling an '18 Can Am Outlander 850 (weight 800 lbs) on a 600 lb trailer, the trans performed well until I stopped on an incline to make a turn. The trans simply would not engage as if I was in neutral. Trans was approx 210 degrees. I backed down the hill, parked on road and sat for 5 minutes, engine running. Temp dropped to 202. Drove it back home, no problems shifting.
Today - My wife drove 25 miles one way without issue. Returning home, she had no issue until she drove up a steep hill, where she barely made it, trans shot up to 230 degrees. she stopped near the top and called to let me know about it. She drove 3 more miles where I told her to park safely, trans went to 240 and she got an engine light. Pulled codes, P0700 and P2723. She attempted to drive it when it dropped to 220 degrees but trans was barely responsive. She sat til trans dropped to 190 degrees and finished the last 10 miles of the trip home without noticeable issue. Trans didnt exceed 200 degrees.
P2723 is Pressure Control Solenoid E Performance Or Stuck Off. Replacing the solenoid is apparently the only possible solution. Locating a decent remanufacturer has not been easy, the internet seems to be making it very hard to find a remanufacturer that people talk about/like.
The transmission fluid stinks and is dark red in color. It doesn't smell like clean transmission fluid but also doesn't have an obvious burnt smell. The fluid and filter are 40k miles old, I was told not to change them and to try a bottle of Lucas Transmission fix. I added this bottle back in January so the issue may have been hidden by lower ambient temps until last week, then agitated by pulling the ATV.
Truck has 198k miles on it and we've owned it since 150k. How the previous owner(s) treated it is unknown; it came from New York state to Ohio.
Seeking input from people with similar experiences, advice on what to do and advice on a reputable remanufacturer where I can order a whole reman trans if I need it.
