Default Considering a '96 Sub K2500 Diesel Purchase: Thoughts?

I'm new to the forum and joined to get some feedback from the collective wisdom of the group. I'm looking at a 1996 K2500 Diesel -mileage is 170K - but "I hear" they will go much further. I plan to have the vehicle inspected by a trusted mechanic before I pull the trigger...

Any experience with the vehicle? Gas mileage? Performance mods you might suggest?

Thanks - I appreciate any help you can provide
