Disable Auto 4WD

Tahoe defaults to "Auto 4WD" on startup
Hi folks,
I'm the new owner of a 2004 Tahoe 4x4.
The manual mentions that fuel economy will be slightly lower when driving in Auto 4WD. I'd like to find a way to keep the Tahoe in 2HI all the time without having to push the button manually every time I start the engine, but the manual doesn't mention any way of doing that.
Is there a way to configure 2HI as the default upon startup rather than Auto 4WD?

Umm, your request is somewhat unexpected.
Usually, the 2WD is automatically selected on startup. However, it's possible that "someone" has programmed your Remote Entry Control to select that option. Try re-programming it or both.

How would I go about doing so? The manual makes no mention of that being an option for the keyless entry personalization.
It does appear that someone somehow configured my Tahoe to select Auto 4WD on every startup. How, I have no idea.

Well, I got home early enough this evening to mess with the Hoe in the daylight ... after extensive testing, it appears it is now behaving as expected, and staying in 2WD even after I shut it off and start it back up. Maybe I was imagining things? I will report back.

I'm sure glad it's resolved, because I was having a heal of a time, trying to find the procedure to reset the preferences for the remotes.

Nuts.
I had shut the Tahoe down in 2WD last night.
This morning when I got in an started it up, it came up in 4WD High!
Then, I shut it down and started it back up and it came up in Auto 4WD.
Sometimes it starts up in Auto, sometimes in 2Hi, sometimes in 4Hi, and once even in neutral.
It's random.
I think this is symptomatic of a failing transfer case position motor/encoder, which I was reading is a known issue on these trucks. Or possibly the 4WD switch, apparently that can give trouble as well.
I've got an appointment at the dealer (CarMax) to get it looked at in a week. It's still under warranty. In the meantime, we've got to be really careful to make sure it's in 2Hi mode ...
