Default Don't overfilling differential

I don't know how many times I've read people argue that it doesn't matter if you overfill the differential. I've seen videos of people overfilling the differential. I followed the fill it till it runs out and now it leaks. When it gets down to where it's supposed to be it stops. Fill it till it runs out at your own risk. The GM specs put the level at roughly 1/2 inch below the fill hole (as measured by my trusty allen wrench). And, the difference between the roughly 2.5 quarts that GM says verses the runs out of the hole (3 quarts) is too much oil in the differential. When it started leaking I pulled the hose off of the vent and inspected it with a drill bit. It was open and the vent hose was breathing as it should. The seals are 1 year old so, not old seals (pinion and axle, rear end rebuilt in early 2017).
