Encoder Motor...what is it??
Appreciate your help in advance...I think I got screwed by my extended warranty company. I have a 2005 Tahoe and was recently on a road trip when the tranny startedshiftinginto neutral. It turned out to be the encoder motor and my warranty company said it was not a covered part. I want to fight them on it but I want to get a little educated on it first if possible. Is this part located inside the tranny, or is it associated more with the 4-wheel drive components?
Thanks!
Thanks!

RE: Encoder Motor...what is it??
The encoder motor is mounted to the exterior of the transfer case, and it is whatcontrols whetherthe transfer caseis inneutral, 4HI, 4LO, etc. There are two transfer case typespossible on your particular model vehicle. Onthe Borg Warnermodel, which is separate from the transmission, the encoder motor is on the rear of the transfer case just next to where the drive shaft connects. On theNew Venture Gearmodel case, whichis behindthe transmission, the encoder motor mountson the driver's side exteriorjust about the middle.

Ron knows his stuff.
I would like to add that; I can not imagine an extended warranty company that did not cover the encoder motor, if you have such a warranty then get a refund of the unused portion and replace it with a better plan.
