Default Factory Roof Racks

I have a 1995 Suburban. I'm wanting to remove the factory installed roof rack to repaint the roof. Are the nuts holding the rack to the roof permanently fixed in position to the underside of the roof metal, or do the nuts fall loose somewhere in the headliner? Another question, can these racks be removed and reinstalled without removing the headliner?

Welcome to the forum.

Usually held on with captive nuts. You can loosen all of them on one corner and lift up and see if they are captive.
