Flat towing 2000 suburban 2500
I need to tow my dead 2000 Surburban 2500 4wd to a repair shop 20 miles away. I plan on using a tow bar. I have read that you can flat tow a 4wd model but not a 2wd without disconnecting the drive shaft. My rig has been sitting so the battery is dead. What would be the procedure? Is it worth having a tow truck come and just tow it?

if the transfer case has a neutral position that disconnects the transmission output shaft from turning with the driveshaft you can dingy to it. I not so sure i would want to dingy tow a truck that big. you could also rent a tow dolley...put the back wheels on the dolley and tow it backwards in 2wd. the rear wheels must be strapped, Can't remember if the steering must be locked straight... but they did loop the seatbelt through the steering wheel to the buckle.
no harm to get a quote from a towing service but its probably $500.
in the future' consider getting a AAA membership...its yearly membership is cheap and you never have to worry about being stranded. I'm a mechanic and i have a membership. There is nothing i want to be fixing on the side of the road.

Check the owners manual? It is always the best source for towing information. Flat towing is a common topic on the motorhome sites and it seems to always come back to "check the owners manual".
