Default HID fog lights?

Local place told me that he has had some customers with some melting issues after installing HIDs in the plastic fog housings. Has anyone done it successfully and are there any tricks? He said something about drilling a hole in the bottom of the housing to dissipate the heat. I'm kinda skeptical about that, especially thinking about moisture issues. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Robb

From what I've read around the forum sphere, you need to find a metal housing that fits the opening.

TMan,

I concur. There have been many Post here, which complain of the melting issue. As stated, metal housings are good, but, you can also moderate the wattage, pick one with a "special" color, which will give you "better" lighting. Remember, the "watts" equate to heat, so, if you replace a 37 watt with a much higher wattage lamp, things will definitely heat up more.

PS:
I would not drill/vent the housings. That'll allow a lot of debris and humidity to enter, and crap up the inside of the enclosure.
You might try getting some Ambers, I've always preferred that over clear.

Also the purpose of fog lites is not to have a blindingly bright lite. You want a moderate lite down low to minimize reflection off the fog. Apparently there are a lot of folks out there that think that they are either driving lites or look cool. I've seen some driving around w/ their fog lites on in the daytime. Obviously members of the cool crowd.

I put a set of those new LED bulbs in there. I think they will do. Pretty close match to the HIDs and theyre not too bright.
