I have a 2002 Tahoe z71 with a built Ls33. Is there a power advantage to removing the mass air filter and re tuning?

Probably, but be expecting a ring job soon. Depending on the environment could be real soon.

ditto..do not remove the air filter. even if you don't care about creating an oil burner; the filter protects the maf hot wire from contamination. Don't use oiled air filters for the same reason. I've seen nissan maf go bad in 2 hours driving with not air filter. gm maf are more robust but don't do it.
