Check that the oil level is correct, that the coolant tank has coolant in it, verify that the vehicle for the most part sounds "normal" when running, no ticking, clacking or obvious other metal to metal like sounds, that the temp is not going out of range or too hot, nothing is leaking or pouring out anywhere, and you should be fine to get to your mechanic...

Sounds more like an ignition problem. Check obvious as mentioned and you should be ok. I've found most of the time that code is due to cracked or damaged rotor under the distributor cap. been seeing a lot of them failing lately. If the cap is not ate up try just the rotor button. Might be a cheap fix.
