Default Noisy Driveline

I heard a bad sounding clunk the other day when I was backing out of the driveway and shifted into drive from reverse. Sounded like it was coming from the area near the transfer case. Driving it seemed fine except for an intermittant thumping noise that seemed to be keeping pace with the drive shaft turning. I couldn't see anything wrong. Took it to the garage and he replaced the rear U-joint (which he said was bad).

It seemed to be better after that but I can still hear a kind of howling/grinding noise in the same area when I let up on the gas pedal. No noise under acceleration -just on release of the load.

I'm thinking transfer case but would that make sense for anything to happen when backing out? I didn't have the 4x4 on at all.

Puzzled.
