Default NP246 clutch pack help needed

I don't remember this on disassembly, but when assembling it, the clutch retaining ring od is very close to the clutch inner bearing inner support id. Matter of fact, when not on the shaft the ring will almost slide into the bearing support. It just doesn't seem like there's enough "meat" to hold the bearing support in place. What am I missing here??? Thanks!
