Push button 4WD lights

Push button 4WD lights
2003 Suburban LT 4-WD, for no reason at all the light for 4wd and 2wd will go to red in neutral, have to stop vehicle shift into park to push button to put back in 2wd. 1st question should it be in 2wd or neutral, and 2nd why is this happening.
