Replacing Door Handle?

I've got an '05 Suburban 2500 with "chrome" handles. Turns out they're just cheap plastic; someone apparently grabbed the driver's door handle by the wrong end and gave a yank, and now the plastic is broken and when you pull the handle to open the door, the "solid" end in front comes away from the door.
Here's a picture of the damage:

Can anyone give me some help with how to get this off and replaced? I don't have any idea what's holding the handle on and don't want to do more damage finding out....
Also if anyone has part numbers for a new one, that would be helpful. I'm assuming I can just move the lock over to the new one?
Or is this something that only a dealer can fix ($$$$)?
Thanks,
Rich

Welcome to the forum.
Looks like the stud or whatever holds it on has broken. Your parts dept should be able to get you the P/N. Check gmpartsdirect.com for a good price.

Impala LTZ--2008--Exact same problem.
GM covered it under warranty--
Part # 25865676. (Same for trucks?????)
They did move the lock to the new handle.
About 45 minutes to install--had to pull the interior door panel.
Was told at the service dept. that this is a common problem on the trucks.
Check with your dealer first as they might replace it as a "good will' type repair.

Same problem on my 2008 Suburban. 1 broke, dealer replaced. Now 2 more have broken. Out of warranty but am calling dealer. Have heard there are metal, billet aluminum aftermarket ones made. I think Summit Racing had them.

Replacing the door handles or are you installing a brand new set? Would you like doorknobs or handles or a combination of both? Which style of door handles would you choose? Have you thought about the sizes? Do you plan to work it out on your own, and if so, do you already have all the tools you need?
