Default transmission oh no

I have a 2004 Tahoe with 4w Drive 8cyl it appears to be stuck in park but the shift lever moves from park to 1st I,m hopping that the cable is disconnected from the shift lever on the transmission. Is there any other possible problem that would cause this o happen

If the cable comes loose, it gets REALLY easy to shift the lever around. Its the transmission that makes it go "clunk-clunk-clunk" as you shift the lever around, not the lever itself.
